@ Scott

Really? "EVERYTHING" available on Windows is now available on Linux? Ok, I'd like: Photoshop, Visual Studio, MODERN games, not Atari 7800 era ones, etc.

Scott,

Thanks so much for your comments.

The backing behind our statement that Linux has largely "flopped" on the desktop is due to the fact that "Desktop adoption of Linux is approximately 1%. In comparison, Microsoft operating systems hold more than 90%" See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Desktop

Of the successful Linux implementations you cite (including your adept observation of "what mobilestance.com is running on"), they are all examples of enterprise, or server-side Linux applications - not Desktop applications - where it's no secret that the low cost nature of the platform has won over many an IT department's infrastructure needs.

In our view the fact that so many consumer applications are available on Linux - and are cheaper (or even free) when compared to Windows apps - and yet are still widely shunned by the overwhelming majority of desktop users pretty much proves out the statement: "Linux: a Failure on the Desktop."

Thanks again for reading mobilestance, and for contributing to the conversation!

To make the claim linux has been a desktop "Failure" , well what is you backing. Did you know that EVERYTHING available on windows and mac is available via linux distros now. linux distros like ubuntu , suse , lindows (which are all free) are being switched too at an alarming rate.

here are some stats and remember just two years ago mozilla was the browser that could not beat IE .

Here comes Linux ---> http://www.maximumpc.com/article/2008_year_of_the_linux_desktop

FYI take a wild guess what mobilestance.com is running on
